York - Wounded Soldiers

The names listed on this page are those of soldiers who were listed in the pages of the Yorkshire Herald (date of publication is shown in brackets) as having been wounded. All of the men listed are thought to have survived the war as there names have not been found on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database. The names have also been checked against the Medal Index Card database, which usually provides Christian names and details of service in other units. The names were listed in the paper with rank, initial, surname, number, regiment and town.

Eli Stembridge was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal; the award was listed in the London Gazette on 22nd September 1916 with the following citation:

“For conspicuous gallantry, coolness and ability in charge of a gun during an attack. To obtain necessary observation of fire he continually exposed himself to heavy rifle and shell fire at close range, and it was greatly owing to his splendid handling of his gun that a successful issue resulted and many casualties were prevented”.
