York and The Great War


Welcome to York and The Great War. The aim of this website is to commemorate the men and women from York and the Ainsty who served in the Great War.

The task is twofold, firstly to identify men and women who served and died as a result of their service and secondly to identify men and women who served and survived the war. To date most of my research has concentrated on recording the casualties and this is reflected in the layout of the website.

The casualties identified so far are recorded in the first section on the York Casualty Roll of Honour pages; these pages have details of regiment, service number, date of death and place of burial and commemoration. The introduction page gives details of the sources used to provide the details.

The second section consists of photos of York war memorials with a transcription of the memorial and a list of the men and women named on them.

The third section details the York men who were taken prisoner during the war. Details on date of capture, home address ect are provided.

The fourth section will list the men of York who served and survived the war. The starting point for this will be the York Absent Voters List compiled in 1918. The introduction page has details of the sources used to provide the information.

The last section has photographs of war memorials from the Ainsty, this section also has the names of the men recorded together with details of regiment, service number, date of death and place of burial and commemoration.

The following photos show the York Citizens Memorial, Leeman Road. The first photo shows the front of the Memorial, the second the text on the front of the memorial and the third the text on the reverse.
