York and The Great War

Welcome to York and The Great War. The aim of this website is to commemorate the men and women from York and the Ainsty who served in the Great War.

The task is twofold, firstly to identify men and women who served and died as a result of their service and secondly to identify men and women who served and survived the war. To date most of my research has concentrated on recording the casualties and this is reflected in the layout of the website. The casualties identified so far are recorded in the first section on the York Casualty Roll of Honour pages; these pages have details of regiment, service number, date of death and place of burial and commemoration. Following these pages there are pages with photos of the York war memorials with a transcription of the memorial inscription and a list of the men and women named on them. The third section, currently consisting of a single page has a small list of York soldiers reported as wounded in the Yorkshire Herald. The last section has photographs of war memorials from the Ainsty, this section also has the names of the men recorded together with details of regiment, service number, date of death and place of burial and commemoration.

The following photos show the York Citizens Memorial, Leeman Road. The first photo shows the front of the Memorial, the second the text on the front of the memorial and the third the text on the reverse.

Site updates:

On Thursday 3 April the Commonwealth War Graves Commission added the name of Henry Almond Boynton to its Debt of Honour database. Henry died after being discharged from the army on 31st December 1918 and is buried in York Cemetery.
